Neighbor speaks about loss of family killed in Fort Worth traffic accident – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

We learn more about a family of four who died in a crash in Fort Worth over the weekend. NBC 5 spoke with a neighbor who told us he's struggling with the loss.

The house on Castle Ridge Drive in Fort Worth was decorated for Halloween night. Perry Scott remembers seeing a family of four getting ready for all the fun.

“They used to be out here every day when I got home from work. The mom, dad and two kids would be out here doing their decorations,” Scott said.

This week he learned that the man, woman and two children died in a traffic accident early Sunday morning. According to police, the collision occurred just after 3:30 a.m. on westbound Loop 820, just before the Azle Avenue exit in Fort Worth.

A total of five people were killed; according to the police, the family of four was traveling in the car in the wrong direction.

“I always see the kids out there playing and I would always talk to them and talk to them. They were good people,” Scott said. “At the moment I don’t understand what happened.”

The man was identified as 28-year-old Daniel Newsome. Family members shared photos with NBC 5. The woman was identified as 29-year-old Johanna Newsome. The children were not named.

According to police, the family's silver Ford Focus burst into flames in the accident. Scott tells NBC 5 his neighbors have only lived next door for about six months.

However, they had already begun to develop a friendship with him, sometimes offering to mow their lawn or help repair a car. He said even his wife was affected by the loss.

“I talked to her and she said she was thinking about the kids because they were really looking forward to this Halloween because it was going to be the best Halloween they ever had,” he said.

Investigators believe the family got onto 820 from Azle Avenue, but don't know why, how or why none of the residents noticed.

A fifth person, 33-year-old Chelsea Cook, a passenger in the other vehicle, also died. Cook's fiancé, Evan Ranallo, suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Friends and family are coping with the sudden loss by remembering how Cook lived.

“If there was one word I could use to describe Chelsea, it would be bright. She was just the personification of light,” said longtime collaborator and friend Brittany Bengry. “She was outgoing and full of life. When I spoke to her mother yesterday she said Chelsea wouldn't want any of us to curl up and be ready.”

Cook and Ranallo were heading home after his band performed at a Halloween event in Keller. They got engaged about three weeks ago during the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque.

Scott tries to make sense of it all.

“The other night I came here in my truck and just looked here. I just kept looking and wondering what happened,” he said.

The crash is still under investigation.
