The Reds will FIGHT against Man United to find the BRILLIANT replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold

The longer the season goes on without Trent Alexander-Arnold signing a new contract with Liverpool, the more likely it becomes that he will leave at the end of the season and join Real Madrid.

Liverpool's vice-captain can speak to other clubs from January 1 – as can Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk – and has been heavily linked with a move, with Jude Bellingham trying to convince him to join him in Madrid.

Although it is far from an ideal situation for Arne Slot when his time on Merseyside only lasts a few months, both he and Trent deserve applause for maintaining their performances at an extremely high level despite all the speculation.

Liverpool's main goal should be to extend Trent's contract at any cost. He is one of the club's best players and carries the tradition

However, should Trent actually leave, the Reds will need to find a replacement and it looks like they could be fighting Manchester United to sign a player.

Jeremie Frimpong: Liverpool or Man United?

Jeremie Frimpong was one of Bayer Leverkusen's standout players in the unbeaten 2023/24 Bundesliga season, giving former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso's side an attacking threat on the right side of the pitch.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are now considering a move to Frimpong in the event that Trent does not renew his contract.

According to the report, Reds scouts have apparently been closely monitoring Frimpong's performances for weeks and were present in the 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen last weekend – with Liverpool reportedly looking to offer him a lucrative deal.

The 23-year-old has remarkable pace and technique and scored nine goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga last season.

His performances have made him one of the most sought-after wide players in Europe, and he was also linked with Manchester United ahead of Ruben Amorim's confirmation as their new first-team coach.

Frimpong would fit into Amorim's 3-4-3 formation, which relies on the two wide midfielders moving up and down the pitch and being present in both penalty areas.

Where exactly he would fit into Slots' side is less clear.

Can Frimpong replace Trent?

Although both are incredibly talented players, Frimpong and Trent actually differ in their abilities.

Frimpong is often described as a right-back, but in reality he played much further forward for Bayer Leverkusen under Alonso.

He pops up at the back post to block crosses and is tasked with attacking the penalty area at every opportunity.

While Trent is incredibly good going forward, he does most of his damage from slightly set back positions, using his passing range to create chances for his teammates. His defense has been questioned but has improved significantly under Slot, who has used him differently than Jurgen Klopp.

Should Frimpong replace Trent, a change in the way Slot sets up his defensive lineup would also be required – unless Liverpool actually hope he plays further forward and replaces Mohamed Salah.
