Eversource Installs Latest Electric Meter Technology in Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Beginning in 2025, Eversource will begin installing smart meters in homes and businesses to measure electricity usage.

This latest technology provides customers with detailed information about their energy consumption and power outage alerts. Additionally, it allows Eversource to detect power outages in real time and obtain information about the location of the outage, helping to speed power restoration outside of severe storms.

A smart meter is a digital electricity meter with wireless communication that transmits information to Eversource's devices and systems.

“Upgrading to smart meters is like replacing an old flip phone with a smartphone,” said Jared Lawrence, senior vice president of customer operations, digital strategy and chief customer officer at Eversource. “Smart meters not only provide our team with information that allows us to shorten the duration of power outages for our customers, but also enable our customers to monitor their energy consumption in near real-time – including how they are using electricity and how “How much they use and peak times during the day – giving them the opportunity to take action to reduce their energy consumption and their bill.”

The transition to smart meters for all Eversource electricity customers in Massachusetts is expected to take approximately three years, with installation in Western Mass beginning in the second half of 2025. Customers will be notified multiple times before their new smart meter is installed.
