Florida real estate mogul George Pino was charged with murder in a 2022 boating accident that left one teenager dead and another permanently disabled

A Florida real estate mogul has been charged with aggravated murder in a boating accident that killed a teenager. Recently released bodycam footage captured the moment he admitted to drinking “two beers” while operating the vessel.

According to Local10, Miami-Dade prosecutors on Thursday charged George Pino with marine homicide/reckless conduct in connection with the fatal Labor Day weekend boat accident in 2022.

Pino, 52, was piloting his 29-foot Robalo boat carrying 14 passengers, including several teenagers, near Boca Chita Key — an island north of upper Florida — on Sept. 4, 2022, for his daughter's 18th birthday a fairway marker came across keys.

The force of the impact threw all passengers into the water and the boat capsized.

The accident killed 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez and left 18-year-old soccer star Katerina Puig with a traumatic brain injury and a lifelong disability.

The girls were both students at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami.

Another teenager was also injured, but his name was not released.

Bodycam footage recorded by NBC 6 on Thursday shows Pino speaking with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials after the fatal crash.

The real estate mogul claimed to officials that he was steering the boat through the canal when another boat caused a wave, causing him to lose control of the vessel.

He said two of the girls were sitting “in the back seat of the boat,” “five or six” others in the front and his wife in the middle as the boat “headed headlong toward the waves.”

“I looked at the girls just to make sure they were OK because they were sitting in the back and next thing I know I hit the wave and tried to swing and the right side of the boat was the left “If you're on the “When you get to the side of the boat, you hit the pylon,” Pino told officers.

The prominent real estate developer refused a voluntary blood test for alcohol and refused a breathalyzer test at the scene of the accident.

“No, I had two beers,” Pino told officers.

In Florida, the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for boaters over the age of 21 is 0.08%.

Pino assured them he felt “as perfect as my mind” but was stunned by what was happening.

He added that he had “always driven boats” and had “done this trip 1,000 times.”

The FWC said Pino had “61 empty alcohol bottles and cans, an empty champagne bottle and a half-drunk bottle of liquor” on his vessel, according to an incident report obtained by NBC 6.

Investigators did not suspect that the real estate agent was drunk when he steered the ship.

At the time, Pino was charged with three misdemeanors for steering the boat when it collided with a channel marker.

According to Local10, the Puig family also accused Pino of speeding during the accident and that he and his wife Cecilia plied the teens with alcohol throughout the day.

In May, a judge ordered the Pinos to pay $16 million to Puig's family.

Joel Denaro, the attorney for Fernandez's family, said the new charges against Pino were filed Thursday after prosecutors reassessed the case and a Miami-Dade firefighter who responded to the boating accident claimed alcohol was a factor was the cause of the crash.

If found guilty, Pino could face up to 15 years in prison.
