Man accused of killing toddler in Maine questions cause of death

ROCKLAND (WGME) – A man accused of killing a toddler in Thomaston is questioning the cause of his death.

A bail hearing was held for Aziayh Scott on Thursday. He is charged with manslaughter in the death of 22-month-old Quayshawn Wilson.

Police said they were called to the Thomaston Walmart on May 29 because a child was not breathing.

The child was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta conducted an autopsy and concluded the cause of death was blunt force trauma and the manner of death was homicide.

However, according to the Press Herald, Scott's attorney says Wilson was killed by the force of improper cardiopulmonary resuscitation by an off-duty nurse.

The deputy attorney general says it is unlikely that life-saving measures caused the injuries that led to the toddler's death.

Police arrested Scott in June in New Orleans, Louisiana.

According to police, Scott, originally from Louisiana, had recently moved to Maine and was living in Owls Head with his girlfriend and child. The couple returned to Louisiana after Wilson's death.

In July, a judge ordered Scott held on $250,000 bail.

There is no word yet on whether Scott's bond amount will be changed.
