Out of the Darkness Community Walk returns to Louisville and fights for suicide prevention

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville volunteers are joining the quarter of a million people walking through cities across the United States to raise awareness of the fight for suicide prevention. The annual Louisville Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place on Saturday, November 2nd at Waterfront Park. Click here to register for the walk or donate.

  • Registration on site Starts: 10:00 a.m
  • Program starts: 11:30 a.m

This walk supports that American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. suicide rate by 20% by 2025.

“Suicide affects one in five American families. We hope our walk will bring attention to this issue and save other families from dying by suicide. Our ultimate goal is to save lives and give hope to those affected by suicide,” said Efia Guthrie, Kentucky Chapter Board Chair and Louisville Walk Chair.

In 2023, over $21 million was raised for suicide prevention nationwide. In Louisville, over $100,000 was raised through 1,000 participants and nearly 200 walk teams.

“These walks are about putting hope into action,” said Robert Gebbia, AFSP CEO. “Research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we continue the fight, the science will only get better and our culture will only get smarter when it comes to mental health. With the efforts of our courageous volunteers and a real investment from our nation’s leaders, we hope to significantly reduce the suicide rate in the United States.”

WAVE News will be walking in honor of one of our photographers, Josh Whitney.
