South Georgia candidates are vying for the U.S. House District 2 seat

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – We are just four days away from what many believe will be the most important election in history. As we keep a close eye on the presidential election, many local races will also have a big impact on voters. One of those races is the District 2 congressional race.

Incumbent Rep. Sanford Bishop will face Republican candidate Wayne Johnson. Bishop has been in office for three decades, but Johnson said the length of time hasn't stopped him from fighting back.

“Sanford Bishop has been in the congressional office for 32 years. He’s done a great job over the years, but at the end of the day it’s time for a change,” Johnson said.

Bishop says his experience makes him more qualified.

“It’s a proven record. I delivered for the people. “I continue to advocate for the people of our region,” he said.

Both candidates said they wanted to address the biggest problems facing South Georgia's neighbors today: poverty and a lack of low-income housing and economic development.

“I intend to do this by using the power of the congressional office to get pilot programs to really focus on getting these things done in Albany and getting them done quickly,” Johnson said.

Bishop said he has managed to raise millions of dollars through grants that went to various programs. He plans to continue that mission while taking into account the concerns of his constituents.

“We are not where we want to be. Of course we would like to make a larger investment, but we do, and I think Georgia is considered the most business-active state in the country. And we get our share in central and southwest Georgia,” he said.

Both candidates say progress in District 2 over the next two years will depend on voters' decisions.

“I think people will decide that I'm worth investing in and trusting me with their voice so I can show them what I can do,” Johnson said.

Bishop said he is confident he will be re-elected.

“I believe that I am better educated, better qualified, more experienced and have a better record that I can deliver for the future people of our district,” Bishop said.

Both candidates tell WALB: No matter who you choose to vote for, it's important that you use your voice through your vote to create the change you want to see in the next two years.
