A Petaluma high school student was hospitalized with “significant injuries” after a serious fight late Thursday night, according to a Nixle alert from Petaluma police.

The fight between two groups of teenagers was reported in the River Plaza parking lot just before 10:45 p.m., with an estimated 20 people involved, according to officials.

During the fight, one of the teenagers suffered a serious injury and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Sergeant. Ryan McGreevy said the department is actively investigating the incident and cannot release information about the details of the injury or the youth's age at this time.

The fight involved Casa Grande High School students but occurred outside of school hours, campus administration said in a community statement.

Because of the incident, the school will be under increased surveillance next week by Petaluma police and North Bay Security.

“We know that incidents like this weigh heavily on all of us, especially because Casa Grande High is such a vibrant and incredible community,” the statement said. “We are deeply proud of the school and work hard to ensure our students, staff and families feel welcome and safe at all times.”

Psychological counselors are also available for students who feel affected by the incident. Students are encouraged to report anything they hear or see, school officials said.
