Derrick Lewis' medical issue forces UFC to abandon fight against Diniz

Saturday's heavyweight bout between Derrick Lewis and Jhonata Diniz at UFC Edmonton at Rogers Place has been canceled.

UFC officials said the last-minute cancellation was because Lewis was suffering from a “medical issue unrelated to weight loss,” which prevented him from competing.

Lewis (28-12) weighed exactly the 266-pound limit Friday morning for a non-title heavyweight bout. However, he did not show up for the ceremonial weigh-in later in the day. No reason was given and it was assumed that Lewis could still compete.

UFC officials later confirmed that Lewis was unable to attend the event and that his fight with Diniz (8-0) was canceled.

With the leading lady losing a fight, a women's flyweight bout between Jasmine Jasudavicius and Ariane da Silva will fill the vacancy created by Lewis-Diniz.

UFC Edmonton is headlined by a flyweight bout between former champion Brandon Moreno and Amir Albazi.
