Mom Goes Viral With Candid Relationship Advice at Daughter's Girls' Night (Exclusive)

Recently, a woman shared her mother's sage relationship advice about choosing the right spouse with the world via TikTok – what followed was a viral sensation that speaks to the emotional bonds and support of true love.

Single social media influencer Madison Messer, 33, from Tampa, Florida, has a close relationship with her mother, who is also known for giving great advice.

In her viral clip, which has been viewed more than 8 million times, Madison's mother Robbi Messer, 66, takes center stage in the short but emotional video of a girls' night out to choose the right person to marry.

“OK, this isn't my normal content, but we're having a girls' night out with a bunch of my friends [sic] And my mom gives us her advice…it's intense, but it felt too strong not to share,” the text in the video reads, as Robbi tells Madison and her friends what they look for in a spouse should.

“The person you marry, who you must know with all your heart, will be with you through the death of your mother and the death of your father. And if he’s not up to this challenge, you shouldn’t marry him,” Robbi says in the video.

“When I married my husband I knew that and we talked about it and he knew how hard it would be for me…he knew what his job was and he got me through my father's death and that Death of my father accompanies mother. Marry a man who will do that for you,” Robbi continued.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Madison and Robbi opened up about the emotional moment that went viral and the relationship advice that millions have responded to.

“Yeah, I always gave her advice,” Robbi says, to which Madison quips, “Do I have to take it?” before adding, “As I get older, I get better at following the advice and maybe doing things a little more “to see” more clearly.”

About the making of the video, Madison explains, “My mom has always been a resource for my friends to turn to, there's something warm about her and people trust her.”

She went on to say that she was “going through my own relationship issues at the moment” while one of her friends who was there that night was going through a divorce.

“We all had a moment where we thought, 'God, what are we all doing? How are you supposed to choose this person to spend the rest of your life with?'” she says.

Then her mother started talking and Madison realized it was a moment she would like to remember.

“I stopped her and recorded it, and I never heard her say it exactly that way,” she tells PEOPLE of her mother's advice. “It was the kind of advice that makes you just go 'hmmm.'” It was a completely different perspective, a perspective we had never seen before.

Robbi, who admits she doesn't like being in front of the camera, says she wasn't sure how to feel at first when she realized she'd gone viral, but says she's up because of the moving comments the idea came from the video.

“As much as I personally dislike this attention, I was touched that it resonated with so many people. There are thousands and thousands of people who share their stories about the loss of a parent and whether their husband was there or not,” she adds.

Robbi also shared that she and her husband discussed how she would deal with her parents' deaths very early in their marriage, after which he assured her that “you're going to be okay and I'm going to help you through it.” to get over it.” .”

An emotional Madison added that her mother's dream for her is to find a partner who will “take my place when I leave.”

“Like, 'I want you to be with someone who supports you so much and is so for you… My biggest fear is that I'll leave and you won't have anyone to take my place.' And so, I “I want you to meet someone who will be as strong and unconditional for you as I am for you,” Madison remembers.

Robbi adds that this particular advice is that she wants her children to choose someone who will ultimately become their “home” after they die.

“I know that when my children meet their child, I will no longer be their home,” she explains. “And I think the most important thing for a spouse is to stop longing for a home because that is your home.” ..Look for your partner who will be your true north.”
