The next threat for severe storms: flooding is taking shape this weekend

The next threat of severe storms and flooding looms this weekend as a new storm system will batter the Plains and Midwest.

The FOX Forecast Center said days of heavy rain and severe storms could lead to flash flooding as well as strong wind gusts and hail. The risk of tornadoes cannot be ruled out either.

The storm system moved into the desert Southwest Saturday morning, spreading heavy rain across eastern New Mexico into West Texas. Flood warnings have been issued in eastern New Mexico after 1.5 to 4.75 inches of rain fell, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms are expected to intensify to severe levels on Saturday as the system moves into Texas and Oklahoma. Supercells could produce large hail and some severe wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour.

The FOX Forecast Center said Sunday that forecasts for severe thunderstorm development from northwest Texas through western and central Oklahoma north into Kansas are reasonably good.

Moderate wind shear and atmospheric energy should support the development of supercells, with the possibility of large hail and wind damage. The threat is expected to persist into the evening as isolated severe storms move eastward across the southern and central Plains.

Severe weather may continue until Tuesday and Wednesday next week. However, according to the FOX Forecast Center, this forecast is currently uncertain.

Several inches of rain will fall in over 20 states

A flooding rain event is expected to develop over the southern United States over the weekend and early next week. Several days of widespread and heavy rain will cause flooding problems despite last month's dry conditions.

Flood watches and warnings remain in effect for portions of southeastern New Mexico and western Texas until late Saturday morning, while new flood warnings remain in effect for the heart of Oklahoma and portions of northern Texas and southern Kansas through Monday morning.

The FOX Forecast Center said the risk of flooding will increase day by day, especially if the same areas experience heavy rainfall for several days in a row.

Sunday in particular will require a close watch across the Southern Plains to identify more widespread flooding issues. Rainfall totals could reach 5 to 8 inches across portions of central Oklahoma into southeastern Kansas and central Missouri.

The multi-day threat will likely continue into early next week, spreading northeast across the Midwest in this pattern, with deep moisture remaining in place.
