Viral image shows Rs 55,600 entry fee for kindergarten students, sparks debate

The announcement was made on X by Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi, an ENT surgeon, shared

Education has become increasingly expensive in India, especially in the metropolises, and skyrocketing school fees are putting a strain on parents. Private schools, particularly those with international curricula, charge higher fees and target wealthy families. Meanwhile, middle-class and low-income families face financial hardships and must sacrifice other important expenses to prioritize their children's education. Recently, a kindergarten's horrendous annual fee structure sparked widespread outrage after it went viral, with many shocked at the exorbitant fees. The fee breakdown includes a one-time parent orientation fee of a whopping Rs 8,400 and a hefty admission fee of Rs 55,600 specifically for Nursery and Junior KG students.

The message was sent to X by Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi, an ENT surgeon, who wrote, “8400 INR Parent Orientation Fee!!!” No parent will ever be willing to pay even 20% of that for a doctor consultation. “I now plan to open a school.”

Many parents who are in a similar situation reacted to his tweet and expressed their opinions in the comments section. One user wrote: “These companies feed on the value of the snob.” If you want this system to stop, don't send your child to a school like this in the first place. This is a difficult step for parents due to FOMO. Therefore the cycle continues.''

Another commented: “People spend on their children what they would never do on themselves.” “That's why expensive coaching centers, schools and colleges are proliferating like crazy.”

A third commented: “We need a revolution in the education system.” Can a startup find an affordable pricing structure with a quality curriculum? A fourth added: “I completed my engineering degree in less than that time!”

Earlier, a real estate consultant in Gurugram contacted X to share a similar concern. Udit Bhandari complained about his son's high school fees, which were constantly at 10% per year. He informed that his son, who is in class three, studies in a reputed CBSE school in Gurugram and the monthly fee is ₹30,000. Mr Bhandari calculated that if the school continues to increase its fees by 10 per cent every year, he would have to pay around ₹9,00,000 per year in fees when his son reaches Class 12th.
