Strong winds delay flights and stir up dust in the Las Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Valley is preparing for a high wind warning Monday.

The National Weather Service issued the warning on Sunday, which will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 25 to 35 miles per hour, but could reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. Gusts in excess of 90 mph are expected at elevations above 8,000 feet.

Currently, the FAA has imposed a 45-minute ground delay for flights departing from Harry Reid International Airport. According to FlightAware, 117 flights have been delayed so far this morning.

Meteorologists are advising valley residents to secure loose items and watch for fallen trees and power lines. Power outages are also expected throughout the valley.

Outside the valley, the NWS notes that the first frost of the season could kill crops or sensitive outdoor vegetation. Unprotected outdoor cables can also be at risk.

Those traveling on highways and highways are asked to exercise caution as wind can make travel difficult.
