Important events

Louise Taylor was at St James' Park this afternoon and her verdict is in. Here it is. Thank you for reading this MBM.

It's Eddie Howe's turn on TNT. “Actually I'm tired… I need a break… it was intense… maybe not an entertaining game for neutral players but fascinating when you're involved… a lack of action in the goal area but that's due to the tactical coordination from both sides… a massive win against a really good team…after we scored Arsenal played well…we were then happy to defend well…we had to…they have threats all over the pitch…I'm really happy with our defensive performance…heroic blocking… If you can’t play brilliant attacking football every week, you have to find other ways to win… Beating Arsenal shows our qualities.”

Mikel Arteta speaks to TNT. “We started really well… dominant… we didn't defend the box well enough… Credit to them, they scored an incredible header and an incredible shot into the box… from then on the game changes… from the moment that When they take the lead, you have to play a different game… adapt to it… we weren't good enough… we didn't find enough answers… I ended up very frustrated… we got sucked into a game that they were constantly looking for … we lacked the consistency to get out of there … thanks to them … it's time to do it on the pitch … we won't find the right words today … we have to do our best in every way.”

Player of the game Alan Bennett Lewis Hall speaks to TNT Sports. “It was a really, really good performance from us… we worked hard together… Bukayo is a great player… if I kept him as calm as possible, I think I did my job well… Every block, every tackle and every throw-in we win we get that The crowd is on the march… I absolutely love my time at Newcastle… I'm just proud to be able to wear the jersey… There aren't many left-backs in the England squad so I'd be lying, if I said I hadn't noticed… But I'm just focused on playing for Newcastle… I can't thank Eddie Howe enough for what he's done for me so far… We're playing good football and getting results, We can build on that.”

Mailbag after the game. “Excellent win, iconic goal and while Russell E was preparing the excuses, I had already jinxed Mikel Merino's performance before the game. My job here is done. I can’t wait to buy a retro jacket from the club store to celebrate (RRP £199)” – Chris Paraskevas

“Nick Pope did it Exactly what Louise Taylor predicted” – Matthew Lysaght

“Throughout the season and some of last season, Arsenal have utilized every dark art found in Mourinho’s playbook. So I'm not sure if Arsenal are complaining about Newcastle's antics as a result of unacceptable play by Newcastle, or if Arsenal are turning away from their own team's poor performance. We need Squires’ Emo Arteta to confirm” – Yash Gupta

“The curse of the MBMer continued in the 49th minute. Well done!” – Joe Pearson

Newcastle goalscorer Alexander Isak speaks to TNT. “That was massive… a big game against a big team… it means a lot to me… kind of a statement… heading is not my strongest quality so it feels good to score… it's special… ours Fans are great, every game, win or lose… that gives you an extra boost… I was successful here and hope I can keep it going… that cross was great… it felt like I just had to jump and mine Put your head on the ball and the rest would take care of itself…credit to [Anthony Gordon] Also…Arsenal have a strong defense…it was a tough task…I'm glad we were able to score and keep a clean sheet…we had a bad patch but hopefully this win will be an icebreaker for us be… a game later a time.”

This is a big win for Newcastle. They scored a world-class goal, Alexander Isak elegantly converted a cross from Anthony Gordon on the plate and then defended resolutely. Cheers erupt at St James' Park and the home team receive the ovation their efforts deserve. The win ends a five-game winless run in the Premier League and sees them rise to eighth place in the table, where they will remain tonight unless Bournemouth pull off a surprise against Manchester City. Arsenal will definitely be hoping the Cherries can pull off something sensational later this afternoon, as another strong performance has seen them lose further ground to the leaders and that is now just one point from the last nine available. They lacked creativity today and Declan Rice's late miss was their only real chance of the entire game. Martin Odegaard cannot return quickly enough for the title-chasing Gunners.

90 mins +7: A yellow card for Havertz, who fights a desperate long ball too enthusiastically.

share

90 mins +6: It's now a celebration for Pope as he first hits a cross clear and then fights for another.

share

90 mins +5: Pope is booked for taking too long on the resulting goal kick, then Guimaraes is replaced by Kelly.

share

90 mins +4: … With that said, Saka Hall takes off on the right side and crosses deep. Rice, six yards away at the far post, somehow heads wide of the left goal, even though it was certainly easier to score. What a chance for Arsenal to salvage a point!

90 mins +3: On TNT, Lucy Ward names Lewis Hall her player of the match for his work silencing Bukayo Saka. Speaking of reverb… “Surely David Hockney?” asks Simon Reeves.

90 mins +2: Rice comes through the back of Tonali and it's another excuse for Newcastle to run the clock down a bit. Stupid of Rice, who shakes his head in annoyance.

90 mins +1: Nwaneri, who has been quiet since entering the game and immediately took a hit, tries from distance. It's a wild attempt that easily clears the bar and also misses. Pope is taking his time with the restart.

90 minutes: Hall defends himself while White threatens down the right inside channel. There are five additional minutes. Both teams' nerves are fraying.

share

88 mins: Jorginho is booked for a clumsy blow to the back from Guimaraes.

share

87 mins: Barnes crosses from the right. Joelinton wins a header, but not powerfully, and it's an easy try for Raya. The tension around St. James' Park is palpable.

share

86 mins: This is Gordon's last post. He was replaced by Barnes while Arsenal swapped Partey for Jorginho.

share

85 minutes: Zinchenko crosses deep from the right. Jesus knocks him down in the left corner of the six-yard box and prepares to shoot… but Gordon arrives on the scene and grabs the ball. That had to be perfectly timed or there would have been a penalty.

share

84 mins: So this interruption for Newcastle's goalkeeper. Here's Russell E again: “The Guardian's Louise Taylor said yesterday: 'Players are sometimes awarded mini-rests as Newcastle indulge in the dark arts, particularly time-wasting tactics, to secure the lead.' Watch out for Nick Pope going down, apparently injured.' And here we are.”

share

83 mins: Guimaraes buys a cheap free-kick from a clumsy Partey and the pressure on Newcastle temporarily eases.

share

81 mins: Another free kick from Arsenal goes nowhere as Rice's cross from the right is of no use. Newcastle try to counter and Gordon, dribbling down the right, has opportunities in the middle, but he dawdles and dawdles and finally Gabriel comes from behind and rips the ball off his toe.

share

79 mins: Arsenal get the ball and Newcastle can't get out. But there is no last ball. The hosts relative therefore comfortable.

share

77 mins: After a wash with the magic sponge, Pope can continue. “No crucial insight into the plot, but is it just me or does Lewis Hall – if you imagine him with glasses – bear an uncanny resemblance to the young Alan Bennett?” asks Rob Knap. “Once you've seen it, etc. (Admittedly, this might be for a relatively small portion of your audience.)”

75 minutes: …and now it's Newcastle's turn to worry as Pope goes under without anyone near him. Then the physiotherapist comes.

share

74 mins: Saka falls to the ground in pain after Hall accidentally hits her in the heel. Lots of screaming, although luckily he gets up quickly enough and gets back on his feet. For a split second there, Arsenal's hearts go into their mouths.

share

72 mins: Another double swap from Arsenal and Timber and Trossard make way for Jesus and White.

share

71 mins: Tonali is cautioned for causing Havertz to fall while he was in flight.

share

70 minutes: Newcastle go up the other end and win a corner on the right. Tonali comes in. It's another particularly bad throw, but Arsenal are only half clear and Tonali can try again. This time Arsenal are coping with the situation. This is going to be pretty tricky.

68 mins: Another Arsenal corner leads to nothing. The visitors are now a bit frustrated.
