Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion: Premier League – BBC Sport

It was the second time these sides met this week as Liverpool beat Brighton 3-2 in the Carabao Cup. But with a total of 18 substitutions between both teams since that game, that probably wasn't entirely relevant to this game.

However, Gakpo was the only Reds player to keep his place after scoring twice in the win at Sussex.

The Reds have only lost once under Slot – at home against Nottingham Forest, who now sit third in the table after their win over West Ham.

And for a while it looked as if there had been a second defeat at Anfield.

The home fans were quiet at times as they watched their team outplay – and if Kelleher hadn't made a few saves they might have been more than a goal behind.

They were much better in the second half, having seven shots on goal compared to just one in the early stages.

Joe Gomez forced a save with a header shortly after coming on at half-time and Virgil van Dijk should have done better when he wasted a good chance.

Salah tried to slot the ball over the Brighton goalkeeper but failed to make enough contact and the ball was saved.

But they got better and better into the game and the breakthrough came when Gakpo's cross evaded everyone and went straight into the goal. Forward Darwin Nunez appeared to be celebrating, but replays showed he didn't take any contact.

And once again Salah was the hero with a typical curling shot from the right.

The Reds were close after that and rarely looked like they would lose that lead.
