Qualifying for the Formula 1 GP in Brazil was postponed due to the flood in Interlagos

Qualifying for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Sao Paulo has been delayed due to a deluge of rain at Brazil's Interlagos circuit.

While the sprint race began in dry conditions on Saturday, a violent storm raged over Interlagos in the run-up to qualifying for the GP on Sunday.

As the rain did not let up, the FIA intervened and postponed qualifying, which was supposed to start at 3:00 p.m. local time.

A further announcement was due to be made at 3:30pm local time to determine how Formula 1 would proceed.

Time was running out to complete qualifying before sunset in Interlagos, scheduled to take place at 6:21 p.m. local time, with an end to the rain now in sight.

However, the completion of Q1 alone will be enough to determine the starting grid for Sunday's race.

If the weather doesn't improve and the track isn't suitable for racing, qualifying could well be postponed until Sunday morning.

However, with bad weather also forecast for Sunday afternoon, there is no guarantee that the GP will go smoothly.

Before a decision was made, the FIA sent the Medical Car for a lap at Interlagos to check the conditions on the track.

After this round, the FIA announced a new qualifying start time of 4:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT).
