Liv Morgan overthrows Nia Jax

Nia Jax and Liv Morgan faced off at WWE Crown Jewel 2024 in a heated battle between two of pro wrestling's biggest villains, but in the end it was Morgan who came out on top thanks to some assists from The Judgment Day.

Morgan, the Women's World Champion, defeated current WWE Women's Champion Jax in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after interference from both Raquel Rodriguez and Dominik Mysterio, to become the first-ever Women's Crown Jewel Champion. It was perhaps the perfect ending for two world champions who, although both technically equal, couldn't be more different.

WWE has spent much of 2024 building Jax into one of its most dominant Superstars. She is the queen of the ring, SmackDown's top champion and even boasts victories over the likes of Bayley, Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill. Morgan, on the other hand, spent much of her year pursuing a soap opera-like love triangle with Mysterio and Rhea Ripley.

If anyone was going to win this game with an outside assist, it would always be Morgan.

Morgan's title reign on Raw is losing some momentum as her feud with Ripley has seen a boost in pace due to Ripley's injury, while her Judgment Day stable continues to lose star power. With Ripley and Priest now permanently out of the faction, Morgan has been booked as the focal point of the group, and one thing is certain: she and Mysterio continue to be a big hit with the crowd.

The same goes for Jax, but the noticeable difference is that she appears to be on the upswing, while Morgan's red-hot streak on Raw slows down and slows down.

One of the best storylines on the SmackDown brand right now is Jax's “friendly” relationship with Tiffany Stratton, the current holder of the Money in the Bank briefcase, who has touted another payout at Crown Jewel but was thwarted by Rodriguez. It doesn't take a psychic to see where this ultimately leads, as Stratton will likely become a babyface as she cashes in her MITB briefcase against Jax and becomes main roster World Champion for the first time.

That's why WWE and creative head Triple H have made such a concerted effort to make Jax a formidable and hated champion, and it's worked incredibly well for the blue brand in recent months.

Jax has vastly improved her work in the ring and her overall character, turning herself into a real heat magnet, and yet she is also incredibly dominant. Sure, Jax isn't quite as protected as stars like Roman Reigns or Gunther, but she's benefiting enormously from good booking, which is leading to her being presented as a bigger star than ever before.

Morgan's star power has continued to grow exponentially in 2024, but she has yet to prove herself as a true top star and world champion without being involved in a major storyline with Ripley. The biggest challenge for Morgan will be remaining a top star without being anywhere near Ripley, arguably the biggest star in the women's division and one of the top names in WWE in general.

At least for now, Jax is the driving force behind Stratton's rise to the top of the list, but not much damage was done to her character in Crown Jewel. She only lost after a little outside interference, and her story with Stratton is still on track. Morgan stayed true to herself with a dirty win, but now that Ripley is sidelined, she's faced with the big challenge of finding another entertaining storyline.

Although Morgan's victory in Saudi Arabia cemented her as a cowardly heel, her immediate future on Raw remains unclear.
