Two teenagers were killed and another was seriously injured in a fiery accident on the riverbank

An early morning crash in Riverside on Saturday left two teenagers dead and another seriously injured after police said the driver ran a red light.

It happened just before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Wood Road and Van Buren Boulevard. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found one of the cars involved in the crash engulfed in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, officers found two people – a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl – dead. Another 17-year-old, who police say was sitting in the back seat during the accident, was seriously injured. Paramedics took him to the hospital.

Officers investigating the crash said the car the teens were in was “traveling north on Wood Road at a high rate of speed” when the driver ran the red light at the intersection. A driver in a Scion was driving along Van Buren when his car collided with the teen's, causing her car to hit a light pole, a utility pole and a tree before bursting into flames.

The driver of the Scion was not injured in the accident. Police said he was cooperating with investigators.

Police have not identified the two teenagers who died in the crash because authorities have not notified their families. According to investigators, drugs and alcohol may have played a role in the accident.
