Shabaz Masoud pulled off the bookmakers' surprise over Liam Davies in Birmingham on Saturday to win the IBO super bantamweight world title. Masoud's win makes it 3-0 in his rivalry with Davies, which dates back to the amateurs, where Masoud defeated the former IBO champion twice.

In their first professional meeting, the Ben Davison-trained boxer improved to 14-0 with a split decision victory over Davies (113-115, 115-113, 116-112) in front of a loud pro-Masoud crowd at BP Pulse Live .

The key for the 28-year-old was the southpaw's hindquarters, which touched Davies' chin cleanly throughout the night. Davies couldn't find an answer to this punch and Masoud's overall sharp skills. Masoud built a big lead after five laps and from then on it was a mountain to climb for Davies. However, he finished the fight strong and managed to pick up the pace when Masoud was tired and land close-range combinations.

A judge gave a controversial score for Davies, although Masoud still emerged as a deserving winner. It was a match that pitted Eddie Hearn's Matchroom against Frank Warren's Queensberry – and there's another Matchroom vs. Queensberry fight coming up in the same weight class in December, Dennis McCann vs. Peter McGrail. Masoud could likely face the winner of McCann vs. McGrail in 2025.

Saturday's undercard featured former undisputed world champion Chantelle Cameron, who won a decision over Patricia Berghult, and former British champion Ekow Essuman, who won a majority decision over Ben Vaughan.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 12

Davies gave it his all in this last lap, but that's not enough for me. Great fight between the two. Both men threw from the first round until the final bell, Masoud was simply sharper tonight and came into the game with a game plan that he executed perfectly.

    10-9 Davies, 115-113 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 11

Liam Davies is said to need a break in the corner between the 11th and 12th rounds. He had more success in the second half, but it didn't last. Davies had troubles, but Masoud dominated for much of the laps.

    10-9 Davies, 106-103 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 10

Davies put Masoud in trouble with a combination in the first minute. Two minutes later, however, Masoud was strong and could perhaps have topped the round. Davies simply had no answer to Masoud's left hand all night.

    10-9 Masud, 97-93 Masud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 9

Davies stunned Masoud with a left hand in the second minute, his best effort of the fight. However, Masoud finished the round strongly, catching Davies with two-punch combinations.

    10-9 Davies, 87-84 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 8

Davies managed to close the gap further on lap 8, however Masoud was happy to fight Davies' fight at times and opted to swap with him on the inside.

    10-9 Davies, 78-74 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 7

Fantastic reaction from Shabaz Masoud on lap 7 after Davies showed his best performance on lap 6. More flush left hands from Masoud, and Masoud now integrates the right hook. Left-right hook combination in the last 25 seconds.

    10-9 Masud, 69-64 Masud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 6

Best round of the fight for Liam Davies, who lands a sustained attack on Masoud in the second minute. Masoud responds in the final minute with several straight left hands. Close round.

    10-9 Davies, 59-55 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 5

Masoud's defense is compact at close range. Daives needs to change levels, attack the head and body, and use more feints to disguise attacks. Masoud is sharper than Davies and that presents a really tough challenge for the Telford man.

    10-9 Masoud, 50-45 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 4

Blood begins to flow from Liam Davies' right eye, the side of his face that Masoud is pounding with his left hand. Davies threw a combination in the final 45 seconds and then gave her a solid right hand punch to the body. He has to come closer.

    10-9 Masud, 40-36 Masud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 3

Masoud's hands are too fast for Davies at this point in the fight, the left hands hitting Davies' face with more force. Davies struggles to land really cleanly. He needs to take more time instead of hitting too quickly.

    10-9 Masood, 30-27 Masood.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 2

Better round for Davies, who lets through some combinations. However, the clean power punches in this round once again came from Masoud. Masoud's lefty southpaw still can't miss. Davies warned several times against using the elbow.

    10-9 Masoud, 20-18 Masoud.

  • Davies vs. Masoud Round 1

Great opening round for Shabaz Masoud who finds a home for the left hand on the chin of Liam Davies. Masoud landed the straight back hand flush at least half a dozen times. Big round for the challenger on the back foot, Davies looks to apply pressure and push him back.

    10-9 Masoud.

  • Next main event: Liam Davies vs. Shabaz Masoud

  • Cameron BEATS Berghult in co-feature

Chantelle Cameron dominates Patricia Berghult, winning a largely unanimous decision (99-91, 100-90, 98-92). She will now have her sights set on the winner of Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano 2 on November 15th.

  • Cameron vs. Berghult rounds 9-10

Berghult had her best round of the fight in round 9, keeping Cameron away with her left hand for much of the round, but Cameron still had her moments, probably the only round to score for Berghult.

However, Cameron finishes the fight strongly in the final round with more aggression and work rate and should win a comfortable decision.

    99-91 Cameron

  • Cameron vs. Berghult rounds 7-8

The right hand was Cameron's best punch in the final rounds. Berghult throws a wild looping left hand and is easily countered by Cameron's right hand. Cameron is well above Berghult and is on his way to a decisive victory.

    80-72 Cameron

  • Cameron vs. Berghult rounds 5-6

Large body attack from Cameron at the end of round 6. Berghult looks out of breath, the left hook to the body – with Cameron sitting on it – doing the damage. Two more dominant rounds for Cameron.

    60-54 Cameron

  • Cameron vs. Berghult rounds 3-4

Mostly one-sided. Berghult stumbled back when Cameron landed the left hand in round 3, but it appeared to be a balance issue rather than the impact of the punch. Cameron finds a home right hand in the final 30 seconds of round 4. Two more rounds are on the bench for the Brit.

    40-36 Cameron

  • Cameron vs. Berghult rounds 1-2

Cameron starts aggressively, forcing Berghult back with a jab, and as she gets closer, Cameron releases her hands with hooks and uppercuts. The right uppercut and left hook combination lands cleanly several times. Cameron wins both rounds convincingly.
