Professional women's race

Sheila Chepkirui won the professional women's race in a time of 2:24:35, finishing seconds ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri.

It was Chepkirui's first participation in the New York race after she began running the marathon in 2022. She finished the race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 35 seconds. Obiri finished almost 15 seconds behind.

Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui wins the professional women's race at the 2024 TCS NYC Marathon.

Obiri was aiming to become the first repeat winner since Kenya's Mary Keitany won three straight from 2014 to 2016. Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya came third, securing the top three spots for the African nation.

The top Americans finished sixth in both races. Conner Mantz led the men's race and Sara Vaughn led the women's race. Vaughn was in the lead group heading into mile 20 as they entered the Bronx before dropping off the lead group.

Vaughn was prepared to run in Chicago before COVID-19 prevented her from competing in that race. She came late to this marathon.

Men's wheelchair race

Daniel Romanchuk from the USA won the men's wheelchair race ahead of David Weir and Tomoki Suzuki.

Romanchuk finished with a time of 1:36:31.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland tried to win the race for the fourth time in a row and seventh time overall.

Hug struggled with a cold before the race and fell behind in the second half.

The Swiss star, nicknamed “Silver Bullet,” had won 16 consecutive marathons, including a gold medal at this year’s Paralympics in Paris. He also won the Chicago Marathon a few weeks ago.

Hug, 38, was in the lead heading into Manhattan on Sunday before falling off the pace. Romanchuk said a pothole on First Ave. caused problems for some participants.

There was then a three-man race between Romanchuk, David Weir and Tomoki Suzuki. The trio reached the final mile within a second before Romanchuk, who also won this race in 2018 and 2019, pulled away in 1 hour, 36 minutes and 31 seconds to secure the win.

“I know most of the other racers pretty well. Just try to completely empty the tank in the last mile,” Romanchuk said. “It's amazing.”

Weir, who finished second in 2021 and won the title in 2010, finished 5 seconds behind. Suzuki finished third with a time of 1:36.43.

Hug finished fourth, 3:38 behind the winner.

Women's wheelchair race

Susannah Scaroni of the USA, who won the race in 2022, built a huge lead in the first few miles and never looked back.

Her final time was 1:48:05, minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.

Scaroni beat another American, Tatyana McFadden, to win the race by more than 10 minutes in 1:48.05.

“It’s always special to be here in New York City,” Scaroni said. “I woke up today feeling great, that's never a given. As we got up the last hill we had a tailwind today. So I had a little more energy than I normally have on that hill.”

Scaroni set a course record with her win in 2022 and finished third a year ago.

It is the first time in the race's history that both the men's and women's wheelchair events were won by Americans.

The NYC Marathon has been running since 1970 and last year more than 50,000 runners completed the race. The race is organized by the nonprofit New York Road Runners. Runners can participate in the marathon in a variety of ways, including through a qualifying time, a lottery, or donating to charity.

For the first time, the organization added a “Team for Climate,” allowing runners to donate $3,000 toward carbon credits to participate in the race. While New York has been warm all week with temperatures ranging from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), it is expected to cool down to 50 degrees Celsius on race day.

To enhance the runners' experience after the 26.2-mile race, the New York Road Runners worked with the city and arts organizations to offer deals on some museum admissions and tickets to Broadway shows.
