14 people were killed when lightning struck a church in a remote refugee camp in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda – A lightning strike in a refugee camp in northern Uganda killed 14 people, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the remote Lambo district on Saturday. Police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke said 34 other people were injured. The victims have not yet been identified, he said.

Residents of the Palabek settlement camp, which houses mostly refugees from South Sudan, were attending a prayer service in the makeshift metal structure when the light struck.

Deadly lightning is frequently reported during the rainy season in this East African country. Rusoke said there was no report of a fire outbreak following the strike.
