Ten people have died in a truck accident in the Ecuadorian Amazon region

QUITO, Ecuador – Ten people died Sunday when the truck they were traveling in on the Ecuadorian Amazon plunged into a ravine, the South American country's law enforcement authorities said.

Police in the Amazon province of Morona Santiago in the southeast of the country said the only survivor of the crash was a three-year-old girl. The authorities initially did not provide any information about the cause of the accident.

Ecuador's Integrated Security Service said in a statement that the vehicle came to rest next to the Paute River on Sunday morning after plunging into the ravine. Photos released by the agency show the vehicle upside down, surrounded by rocks, on the river bank.

Roads across Ecuador were busy throughout the weekend due to a five-day holiday marking the Day of the Dead.
