Two dead in crash on Highway 51 north of Madison

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A crash Sunday morning left two people dead, one injured and closed U.S. Highway 51 south of County Road DM, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Shortly after 11 a.m., officers from the Dane County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident, along with units from the Deforest Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Deforest Fire and EMS.

Their preliminary investigation revealed that two cars were traveling northbound on Highway 51 when a car driven by a 43-year-old man collided with another car driven by a 23-year-old man. The impact threw the 23-year-old's car into oncoming traffic, where it was then hit by a southbound car. The 67-year-old male driver of the southbound car was not injured, according to the sheriff's office.

The 23-year-old driver died at the scene of the accident and his 23-year-old passenger died after being taken to hospital. The 43-year-old driver of the other northbound vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office at a later date.

Both lanes of Highway 51 between County Highway DM and County Highway V were closed pending an investigation by troopers and an accident reconstructionist.
