Harris moves over how she voted on California's anti-crime protest 36

Vice President Kamala Harris dodged answering how she voted on Proposition 36, a tough-on-crime measure on California's ballot.

Harris made her career as a progressive Democrat and was recognized as one of the most liberal senators in recent history. She is taking a more centrist approach in her 2024 campaign, largely avoiding discussions about some of her previous positions. This was made clear on Sunday when she avoided answering how she voted on the anti-crime Prop 36.

Speaking to reporters in Michigan on Sunday, she said she would not reveal her vote because it was just days before the election.

“So I have my ballot, it's on its way to California and I trust the system to get it there and I'm not going to talk about the vote on it because honestly it's the Sunday before.” “I didn't the intention of endorsing it in one way or another,” she replied when asked how she voted.

Prop 36 would increase penalties for certain drug and theft crimes. Although unpopular among progressive Democrats, it is overwhelmingly popular among Californians.

Republicans have focused heavily on crime in the 2024 campaign, portraying Harris and the Democrats as too soft on crime. They have focused particularly on migrant crime and are attempting to link it directly to the Biden-Harris administration's border policies.

She is spending the day campaigning in Michigan, where she visits Black-owned businesses and holds a rally on the campus of Michigan State University in Lansing.
