East Texas school bus carrying cheerleaders involved in crash on I-69 near SH-288

HOUSTON – An East Texas school bus carrying high school cheerleaders was involved in a crash on I-69 near SH-288 on Sunday.

The bus belonged to the Lufkin ISD in East Texas. The district confirms that 34 Lufkin High School cheer students and several adults were on the bus heading to Rosenberg for a competition at the time of the accident.

A total of eight vehicles were involved in the accident.

According to Lufkin ISD, three students were taken to the hospital for medical attention. Two of them have since been released and one remains held for observation.

According to the district, the cheer team is returning to Lufkin after the crash.

“Lufkin ISD appreciates the support and assistance of first responders, staff and parents who arrived on scene,” the district said.

The highway was closed while police investigated the accident. It has now reopened.
