Mental health is the focus of the 9th annual Fight Like a Ninja hockey tournament

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – An annual tradition that combines hockey and mental health awareness took place this weekend.

The ninth annual Fight Like a Ninja hockey tournament was held at Scheels Iceplex in honor of Brittany Corcoran.

Corcoran took her own life after a battle with depression, but her light continues to shine during the annual tournament.

She was a hockey fanatic, so the tournament also served as a fundraiser for a scholarship fund for other young girls who shared her passion.

“Every year we see so many of the same faces come back, and they have chosen to come back year after year, not just because of the hockey, but because of the message we give them every year. Seeing these girls grow up and have some knowledge about mental health and self-care is just amazing,” said Angela Drake, CEO of Fight Like a Ninja.

“Mental health is really important because someone may be struggling and you always have to be there for them. This tournament is really important because it sparks a conversation for someone who is struggling with their mental health,” said Kallee Behm of Team Ninja.

Fight Like a Ninja also hosts the Shamrock Shakes for Brittany fundraiser every March.
