Orlando police release the identities of two people killed in a Halloween shooting

Police in Orlando, Florida, have released the identities of the two men killed in a Halloween shooting in downtown Orlando last week.

Tyrek Hill, 25, and Timothy Schmidt Jr., 19, were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire shortly after 1 a.m. during a Halloween celebration, police said.

Seven people ages 18 to 39 were injured – six with gunshot wounds and a seventh from trampling as the crowd fled, police said.

Those who knew Schmidt remembered their friend in interviews with NBC South Florida.

One of Schmidt's coaches at Plantation FC Rush soccer club described him as “humble.”

“The nicest person I have ever coached in my life,” Anis Jerbi, the club’s director, told the broadcaster. “I saw a great person with a great future ahead of him, but God knows what he does with these good people.”

A friend of Schmidt's, Tan Bei, called him a “good person” and said: “When you think of him, not a single negative thought comes to mind.”

Police arrested 17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, police said.

No motive could be determined. Police said Friday that the suspect was uncooperative and that investigators were trying to figure out how the shooter got the gun.

At a news conference Friday, Police Chief Eric Smith said Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year in Orlando, with 50,000 to 100,000 people.

The gunman was seen in security video released by Orlando police walking through the crowd before appearing to raise his right hand and open fire, causing the crowd to disperse as shots were fired.

About 100 police officers patrolled the area and engaged the gunman shortly after the shots were fired, Smith said. Video released by police showed an officer knocking down the attacker and three other people running to help arrest him.
