Daniel Mobley, Chad Webb Plot to Rob, Murder Chris Vo

When a customer of 57-year-old hairdresser Chris Vo arrived for an appointment at his home in Cleveland, Ohio on December 26, 2021, the customer was met with a horrific sight.

“When they looked at his house, the customer saw blood coming out from under the garage door,” true crime podcaster CJ Johnson continued A plan to killairs Sundays at 7/6c on Oxygen. “And this customer freaked out and called 911.”

When Cleveland police arrived they found a bloody garage, bloody footprints everywhere and a bloody body on the ground.

“The victim was laying on his back on the floor of that garage covered in blood,” said Andrew Hayduk, a Cleveland PD homicide detective A plan to kill. “He had injuries everywhere. Trauma caused by sharp force. Blunt force trauma. He had a gunshot wound. He had a hemorrhage on his neck, which was an obvious indication of strangulation. It was a devastating, drawn-out battle.”

It didn't take long for police to track down their suspects, 29-year-olds Daniel Mobley and Chad Webb, or realize that the murderous pair had been planning the crime for a long time.

“I think Daniel and Chad's plan from the beginning was to somehow sedate Chris and then rob him,” Hayduk said. “I definitely think Daniel was the driving force behind it because of his prior knowledge of Chris. Since Daniel had dated Chris, he knew there wouldn't be many questions… and that tragically ended with Chris' death.”

Video cameras provide police with evidence of Chris Vo's final moments and murder

Cleveland police did not find any forced entry into Chris Vo's home. However, a blood-stained blonde wig was found on the floor. Vos' ring finger on his right hand was also wiped clean, as if a ring had been removed. But it was Vo's phone and its camera surveillance system that gave the police a lot of evidence against Vo's killer.

At around 8:37 p.m. on Christmas Day, Vo's cameras captured a man walking toward the house. At the same time, Vo's indoor camera showed him sitting and waiting in a blonde wig.

“From the video, we could see that this encounter was with someone Chris knew or at least expected to come by,” Hayduk said. “They were friendly to each other. It seemed like a normal interaction.”

But a few minutes later, the cameras showed a second man wearing a face mask and construction vest coming to the house and turning off all the Christmas lights outside. Then he walked up to the outside camera and turned it away from him. What followed was Vo being beaten, shot and strangled – some of which was caught on camera.

“After the violence was over, these two individuals were seen hugging each other,” Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Filiatraut said A plan to kill. “As Chris lay lifeless on the other side of the room. When you see the violence that happened to Chris, and then you see these two people comforting and hugging each other after what they did to Chris – it's truly horrific. Disgusting.”

Cameras showed one of the men driving off in a pickup truck and coming back to pick up the other man.

“It was over the top,” Vo’s friend Lily Fide continued A plan to kill. “I don’t know if it was anger or hatred. Jealousy. Greed. I just couldn’t imagine how scared he was at that moment.”

The police find damning evidence of murder in the Chris Vo case

Within days, police in neighboring Lakewood, Ohio, called Cleveland officers and told them they had arrested two people over a stolen truck. Daniel Mobley and Chad Webb were found at a hotel with a truck that matched the description of the truck pictured on the cameras at Vo's home.

Incriminating evidence found in the truck and hotel room included handguns with a bullet matching the bullet left at the crime scene, drugs, Chris Vo's credit card, a construction vest, a silver ring with blood on it and a notebook.

“It had Chris Vo’s address on it. Birthday. Some password information,” Hayduk said. “There were comments about bleach and bullets.”

Officers discovered that Mobley and Vo had a relationship before Mobley began dating Webb. Mobley had been arrested six months before the murder for stealing Vo's car, and Vo had testified on his behalf in court, even though he was the victim.

“In my opinion, Daniel was the mastermind behind it,” Hayduk. “I can't imagine Chris' feelings of betrayal. A man he had a relationship with. That he had gone to court and stood up for it. And within two and a half months, Daniel turned the whole thing around and was part of a planned murder of Chris in his own home.”

Chad Webb's physical appearance also gave police clues.

“In Chad’s booking photos, his head had all sorts of cuts and scratches. Like Chad was in a physical altercation,” Filiatraut said. “When Chad showed up after his arrest, he had the exact same wounds on his head that you see in the video itself.”

The police discovered further evidence in Vo's cell phone data that pointed to premeditated murder.

“In this case, the planning effort was immense,” said Filiatraut.

Vo had been talking to Webb through a dating app on his phone and eventually invited him to her home on Christmas night.

“Chad reached out to Chris and made it seem like he was just looking for a date,” Hayduk said. “Chad Webb sends pictures of himself to Chris Vo. It was obviously him. That was the first meeting between Chad and Chris.”

“Using Chad as a means to enter Chris' home – that was crucial to their premeditated plan to enter Chris' home, rob him and kill him in his home,” Filiatraut added.

DNA evidence was the final argument against Mobley and Webb.

“Chad's DNA was under Chris' fingernails,” Filiatraut said. “The ring recovered from Chad contained Chris and Chad’s DNA. We found Chris Vo's blood on the construction vest…there was no doubt who did this and no doubt why they did it.”

Chad Webb and Daniel Mobley pleaded guilty to murdering Chris Vo. In November 2023, Webb was sentenced to 28 years in prison and Mobley was sentenced to 36 years.
