Governor Kay Ivey suffers a medical incident during a campaign rally

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is doing well after suffering a medical seizure Sunday evening while attending a campaign rally for 2nd Congressional District candidate Caroleene Dobson.

Ivey, 80, was one of several attendees at the event, held at the SweetCreek Farm Market on Pike Road. She was standing behind Dobson when she grabbed a nearby pole and shook, witnesses said.

The governor was able to sit down and was immediately surrounded by her staff, and paramedics were later called to examine her.

Reached for comment, Ivey's office said the governor was “dehydrated.”

“As a precaution, she was given fluids and evaluated at the scene,” said Gina Maiola, Ivey’s communications director.

Maiola added that the governor “immediately felt better and is doing well tonight.”

Ivey, who has been governor since April 2017, was diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer in 2019. She received treatment and in 2020 her practice announced that her doctors consider her “cured.”
