I didn't expect Cody Johnson to make me order an extra large box of tissues today, but here we are

Friday is not only my favorite day of the week, because the weekend starts with clocking out. Each week brings with it a batch of new albums and songs. You never know when you'll find your new favorite song, album or artist in the new releases list. Then there are days like today when you underestimate the amount of tissues you need to get through the day. Thanks to Cody Johnson, I order the largest box of Kleenex my local supermarket carries.

Today (November 1st), Johnson released the deluxe edition of his 2023 album Leather. Almost a year to the day after the release of the original album, the Texas native released thirteen new tracks. Overall it's a solid release, but about halfway through the new collection he forced me to turn on the waterworks with “C'mon Cowgirl.” Written by Aby Gutierrez, Adam James and Johnathan Stark, the song is an emotional hammer for parents in general and fathers of daughters in particular.

Although Johnson didn't write the song, he's in the process of living it. He has two small daughters. So he knew what he was doing when he recorded the track. My “little” girl is grown up and has a small child of her own. This song hit me right in the heart, as young people like to say.

Cody Johnson sums up the experience of being a father in 3 minutes

With “C'mon Cowgirl,” Cody Johnson walks listeners through many of the most important milestones of parenthood. It starts on the first day of school and continues from there. The second verse begins with one of the most terrifying moments in any parent's life. So come on, cowgirl, you're too young to drive. / I don't care what the driver's license says, you'd better be home by nine. He then sings about watching your child experience his first heartbreak. Come on, cowgirl, turn off that sad song. / I never liked him anyway, baby, it's his loss.

For me, however, the hardest line of the song comes in the third verse. Come on, cowgirl, that ultrasound looks great. Nothing gives a parent as much fear or as much joy as watching their children become parents.

In short, Cody Johnson has incorporated a parental tearjerker into his new collection. You have been warned.
