Scenes of drinking in K-dramas and viral YouTube chat shows are causing a stir in Korea

Nowadays, scenes of characters exchanging drinks in Korean dramas and celebrities sharing their private lives while drinking on YouTube talk shows are easy to find.

In the popular drama Queen of TearsThe character Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) is a lawyer with a rural background who is married to the leading chaebol heiress Hong Hae-in.

He often finds solace in running into an old friend outside a supermarket, where they drink beer and talk about the difficulties of his marriage.

Such scenes of characters Drink Together are a staple of Korean dramas and are often used as a storytelling device: characters share their deepest concerns over a drink.
