Rocky Neck is expected to remain closed for days while crews battle the brush fire

EAST LYME, CT (WFSB) – With more than 100 fires burning across Connecticut as of Monday morning, the last few weeks have been challenging for local and state firefighters.

Rocky Neck State Park in East Lyme was closed over the weekend due to one of these fires.

Officials expected this to continue for at least a few days.

Channel 3 was told the fire was burning somewhere in the 45 to 50 acre range.

State fire officials said firefighters worked hard to contain the blaze.

They said the fire remains active in a steep, rocky, remote area near Mount Laurel.

Just 45 minutes northwest of Rocky Neck, emergency services reported significant progress on the Hawthorne Fire in Berlin. This fire has been burning for two weeks.

On Monday morning, the emergency services had secured around 50 percent of the fire lines. However, they said the goal is to get that number to 100 percent. They said the hope is to transition to a patrol operation this week.

Although progress was made, obstacles remained.

With little precipitation expected and a few windy days ahead, state fire officials reminded everyone to take precautions.

A ban on all outdoor flames remained in effect across the state.
