play

Have you not yet registered to vote on November 5th? That's okay – you can register to vote on Tuesday.

Wisconsin is one of 21 states with same-day voter registration, meaning you can register before voting at your polling place. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m

How do I know if I am already registered to vote in Wisconsin?

The State of Wisconsin's official website for voter information and registration is myvote.wi.gov. There you can check whether you are already registered and whether your address is current.

If you frequently vote in elections in Wisconsin, you should not need to update your registration. If you haven't voted in the last four years, you may have been removed from the state's voter rolls. In this case, a new registration is required.

There are other situations in which re-registration to vote is required, such as if you have legally changed your name, if you have changed your place of residence since the last election, or if your right to vote has been restored after serving a felony sentence.

What do I need to register to vote in Wisconsin?

You may have heard of Wisconsin's photo ID law, which requires you to present a photo ID to vote. You don't need a photo ID if you're just registering to vote, but you will need it if you're voting at your polling place or requesting an absentee ballot.

Here you will find the materials you need for registration:

  • A Wisconsin driver's license or state ID card, if available. If you have a valid driver's license or ID card, you must provide the number and expiration date. If your driver's license or identification card is revoked, suspended, expired, or you do not have one, you will be asked for the last four digits of your Social Security number. If you don't have any of these, you can write this and other information on the back of the form.
  • Proof of residence. This proves that you live in the location where you are registering to vote in Wisconsin.

What is proof of residency for voter registration in Wisconsin?

Proof of residency shows that you live where you are registering to vote in Wisconsin. This is a different process than providing photo ID. It must contain your current address. So if you have recently moved, your new address must be included. A driver's license is valid as proof of residence, but only if it contains your current address.

Here you can find further examples of proof of residence documents:

  • A bank or credit card statement
  • A paycheck or pay stub
  • A current electricity bill
  • A property tax bill or receipt
  • A residential rental agreement, provided it is valid at the time of registration. You cannot use this if you register via email
  • An admission document from a nursing home or assisted living facility
  • A university or college ID card with your photo. This can only be used if you have a fee certificate within the last nine months or if your university provides a housing list to the local clerk.

Your proof of residency does not need to be in hard copy or paper format. You can also present it electronically on your phone or other electronic device, for example when registering to vote.

Who is eligible to vote in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin residents are eligible to vote under the following conditions:

  • Are US citizens
  • You have lived at your address for at least 28 days. If you have moved within Wisconsin in the last 28 days, you must vote from your previous address. If you have moved from another state, you can only vote in presidential elections.
  • Will be at least 18 years of age on Election Day
