I-96 is reopening in the middle of Michigan after a fatal semi-truck fire accident Saturday evening

The site of a massive deadly wreck that left four people dead in mid-Michigan over the weekend has reopened after more than a day of cleanup.

Access to the westbound I-96 overpass near Webberville in Ingham County was restored Monday morning, state police said on social media. It took more than 24 hours to reopen the highway over M-52 after a tractor-trailer plowed into stationary traffic late Saturday evening.

Three of the deceased were in a vehicle, while the driver of a pickup truck was also killed after being ejected from his vehicle.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured after suffering severe burns, Michigan State Police told FOX 2 on Sunday.

“He ended up just crashing into a group of vehicles. This resulted in an explosion and the vehicles caught fire,” said Lt. Rene González.

Videos of the accident included security footage from a nearby gas station that showed a fireball exploding from the highway after the accident. Additional videos from drivers showed the semi-truck engulfed in flames as debris fell onto the highway below.

Another 17 people were taken to hospital after the accident, which occurred at around 11.48pm on Saturday evening.

Shortly before, state troopers had closed I-96 to hang DTE power poles over the highway. Due to the roadworks, traffic had to be closed for the duration of the roadworks.

According to Gonzalez, road work had been completed and they were in the process of resuming traffic when the accident occurred.
