While he tried to keep some aspects of the finale secret, he told the audience that he had edited the show the same day and that the funeral scenes were “hard to watch.” He then teased her and added, “But was there a funeral? Maybe yes. Maybe not!”

Although we can only speculate about what's to come, James' co-creator Ruth Jones previously joked about possible surprises, telling fans in Barry: “I say (jokingly): 'There's going to be a helicopter crash, most of the cast will be.' also do “get killed” and I just make things up!”

Alison Steadman, who plays Pam, also hinted that the finale was “emotional”, telling The One Show host Alex Jones: “We've had a great five weeks, we only finished on Monday night.” But we everyone was afraid of this last scene. I think 90 percent of us were in tears, some braved it – it was so fantastic.”

James, who also plays Smithy, expressed how emotional it was to say goodbye to the characters. Speaking to Virgin Radio in July, he shared: “We're done writing – we'll never write anything like Pam again.” [Alison Steadman’s character] says again… We'll never think of anything interesting, Bryn [Rob Brydon’s character] has done.

“And we just looked at each other and thought, 'Ah, isn't that amazing?' Even being able to afford the luxury of choosing to end it and being in a position where people still care. For us this is all unimaginable. I'm just very emotional about it; everything.”
