Court accepts guilty plea in car crash that killed 16-year-old

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A man charged in a drunk driving crash that killed a 16-year-old entered a guilty plea, and on the morning of Nov. 4, the court accepted that plea.

Samuel McCoy's sentencing date has been set for December 16.

In October 2023, police said Samuel McCoy crashed into a vehicle in which 16-year-old Jacob Spurlock was a passenger at the intersection of 20th Street and 8th Avenue in Huntington.

The criminal complaint states McCoy, of Huntington, ran a red light at the intersection and caused the accident.

Officers said they were pursuing McCoy, who failed to stop during a traffic stop in Wayne County.

The pursuit ended when McCoy caused the fatal accident.

According to investigators, McCoy admitted to using heroin and distributing a quantity of Suboxone and a handgun before the accident.

Spurlock was a sophomore at Huntington High School.
