Can you register to vote on Election Day 2024? The map shows states where same-day registration is possible

More than 78 million voters initially cast their votes Election 2024but millions more are expected to turn out to vote on election day. In some states Voter registration Deadlines have already passed, but nearly half of the states as well as the District of Columbia are allowing same-day Election Day registration for those who still want to register and vote.

In recent years, many states have offered people multiple ways to register to vote or update their registration to make the process easier and more convenient.

“The good news is that it's easier than ever to register in the United States,” CBS News election editor David Becker told “CBS Mornings” in September.

All voters can check their registration status at vote.gov.

Here's an overview of the states that offer same-day registration, as well as details about the different options and deadlines in each state.

Which states will allow same-day voter registration in 2024?

Nearly half of the states and the District of Columbia allow same-day registration on Election Day. Among other variations on this type of registration, several states offered same-day registration periods that ended before Election Day, but then also offered same-day registration on Election Day.

Here are the states that allow same-day voter registration and their dates for the 2024 election:

Deadlines for pre-registering in person, by mail or online in each state

Deadlines for prior voter registration (as opposed to same-day registration) expired in October in some states, while others do not allow it until Election Day. Use the map below to see your state's early registration deadlines for in-person, mail, or online registration:

Voter registration options in every state

In addition to the traditional method of in-person registration, many states offer online registration, same-day voter registration, and automatic voter registration. Same-day voter registration allows people to vote on the same day they registered early voting periods and in many states even further election day.

About half of states offer automatic voter registration. This means that individuals are automatically registered to vote when they contact certain government agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, and receive a driver's license or ID card. Anyone who would like to unsubscribe from automatic registration can do so. The Center for Election Innovation & Research, led by Becker, offers further information on registration and deadlines for the 2024 elections.
