Irvine is considering killing proposed homeless shelter

Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan is calling on her colleagues to hold a special election day meeting to reverse course on the purchase of land for a homeless shelter she approved less than two weeks ago.

The last-minute meeting, hours before polls close, comes after years of debate over where in the city a homeless shelter could be located or whether there should be one at all.

The council voted 4-1 last month to purchase two buildings in the Irvine Business Complex for $20 million. The buildings will become the city's first homeless shelter.
