Questions remain after a Walmart worker's mysterious oven death

As Canadian authorities continue their investigation, questions remain unanswered about the death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee found in a bakery oven.

Gursimran Kaur, an immigrant from India, was burned to death on Oct. 19 at the Walmart Bakery location at 6990 Mumford Road in Halifax, Nova Scotia, according to a GoFundMe created by a manager at the Maritime Sikh Society.

Kaur and her mother worked at Walmart for two years, organizers said. The mother became concerned when, unlike normal store check-ins, she neither heard nor saw anything from her daughter. The mother eventually opened a walk-in oven and found her daughter's “charred remains.”

Organizers closed the GoFundMe on October 25 after raising over $139,800.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has donated to support Gursimran Kaur’s family during this unimaginable time,” they wrote. “Their kindness and generosity were a source of strength for the family as they struggled through this tragedy.”

Gursimran Kaur was 19.

“At this point we have decided to stop donations as we begin distributing funds to the family. Your donations will help them with their next steps, and we can't thank you enough for standing by them during this painful time.”

The fundraising page said Kaur's father and brother were in India at the time of her death and were trying to get to the United States. It is unknown if they ever arrived in America.

Several attempts by Newsweek The Maritime Sikh Society's request for comment was unsuccessful. Newsweek contacted the GoFundMe organizers again on Monday.

A Walmart spokesperson said Newsweek An Oct. 23 statement said: “We are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with our employee and his family. Our focus remains on looking after our employees and ensuring they receive the support they need. As police have explained, this is a very complex matter and the investigation is ongoing.
