Driver accused of killing man in Riverview street shooting denied bail by Tampa judge

The driver accused of shooting and killing a man in a traffic accident in Hillsborough County appeared in court Monday afternoon.

Kentavious Gholston, 26, is charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of shooting 61-year-old Steven Powers on US 301 near Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview.

Emotions ran high in a Hillsborough County courtroom Monday as family members of Powers and Gholston intervened. At the detention hearing, prosecutors played videos that captured the incident from different angles.

The state showed video from a backup camera of a car pulling in front of Powers' white work van on U.S. 301. A detective with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office testified Monday that the video shows a black Mazda, which they later determined was being driven by Gholston, cut in front of Powers' work van.

That detective said a witness who was in Powers' work truck told them Powers was honking.

“This resulted in the driver of the Mazda, who we later learned was the defendant, checking the brakes and essentially slamming on the brakes,” Detective Garcia said.

That detective said the witness told him that Powers' van and Gholston's car collided while checking the brakes. Gholston's attorney said he showed investigators photos of damage to his car.

Prosecutors also showed security video from a nearby school that captured the rest of the incident. Prosecutors said Powers got out of his work truck and walked toward Gholston's car.

Gholston's attorney said he saw Powers at his car's gas tank and got out of his car. A detective said Gholston told them Powers attacked him, but he dodged the punch and then pushed Powers to the ground.

The state said Gholston shot Powers four times at that point.

“This is an unarmed victim, facing away, in a position on the ground where he is defenseless, and he has been shot four times in the back,” a prosecutor said.

However, Gholston's attorney said as Powers approached Gholston's car, he made threatening and derogatory statements toward Gholston.

“This was a clear case of self-defense,” said Janet Howard, Gholston's attorney. “My client stood his ground. This victim or alleged victim came toward him, he walked toward him aggressively.”

She said Gholston told investigators he was scared during the incident. Howard said Gholston told investigators he thought he and Powers were stopping to exchange information after the cars collided.

A detective said they found no weapons on Powers at the crime scene.

After emotional moments in the courtroom, the judge ordered Gholston to remain in jail without bail.

“Very senseless,” Tampa Judge Michelle Sisco said. “This whole thing. So pointless. Poor judgment.”

Powers' family spoke after the hearing and said they were glad Gholston was not granted bail.

“I lost my only brother,” said Thomas Powers, the victim’s brother. “I just don't understand it. I don’t understand.”
