17-year-old arrested after reckless driving and stolen car accident in Orange

ORANGE, CT (WFSB) – A 17-year-old from New Haven was arrested Monday morning after he was involved in a serious crash on Route 34 in Orange.

According to police, several reports were received of several vehicles driving recklessly from Derby on Route 34.

The incident resulted in an accident near the intersection of Mapledale Road where a gray Kia Sportage collided with two other vehicles and then struck a tree.

Witnesses at the scene reported that they saw the driver of the Kia fleeing on foot into the nearby forest after the accident. Authorities launched a manhunt for the suspect.

It later emerged that both the Kia Sportage and an Audi – which were also implicated in the initial reckless driving complaints – had been stolen from Waterbury the night before.

After making a U-turn on Route 34, the Audi was seen heading back towards Derby.

The suspect, who was seen running from the crash site, was located and arrested.

The juvenile was later identified as a 17-year-old juvenile from New Haven.

After the accident, the teenager was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police have not yet released further details about the charges the teen could face.
