A woman has died in a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus

MILWAUKEE – A 26-year-old woman died Monday morning after a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus.

The accident happened just before 9 a.m. at South 27th Street and Howard Avenue. Greenfield police are leading the investigation.

A car was pinned under a school bus and remains of a gray SUV were surrounded by black fabric. A total of five vehicles were involved.

The school bus driver and three other people were taken to a hospital where everything was said to be OK.

“I just heard a loud bang and a lot of commotion and a sudden stop in traffic,” driver Regina Ivy told TMJ4.

Ivy and other drivers said they rushed to help.

“It was pretty chaotic. Everyone stopped their vehicles to make sure everyone was OK,” another driver named Gary recalled.

“When you hear the term the bus is on its side or rolling over, it takes it to a whole other level,” said Roger Dean Brown, manager at Lamers bus company.

Brown tells TMJ4 that her bus driver has been with the company for years, has an “immaculate record” and just completed the morning rides.

Brown says the bus was traveling south on 27th Street when another driver, traveling east on Howard Avenue, ran a red light, struck the bus and rammed it into nearby cars.

“If you look at what happened here, with serious injuries and deaths and all the vehicles, of course this could have been prevented. “That shouldn’t have happened,” Brown said.

Ivy says after offering to help, she led some people in prayer.

“There was a lot of emotion in the air,” Ivy described.

“It's just sad. Sad for the people in this accident. It is very sad for the deceased person. I can't imagine what her family is going through right now. My condolences go out to them,” said Gary.

Greenfield police officials would not confirm that a driver ran a red light and caused the crash, only saying the investigation is ongoing.

They work with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
