When the College Football Playoff rankings are released: Playoff bracket information

play

College football's new crazy, crazy, 12-team playoff makes its debut this year, and the first official rankings will be announced Tuesday. Such an expansion provides ample opportunities for sometimes overlooked schools to have an impact on the college football season.

Although teams like Georgia, Oregon, Miami and Ohio State have little to worry about right now, other teams with a loss or two like Alabama and Tennessee could well end up outside the CFP Selection Committee's top 12 in their initial rankings. Hopefully these rankings serve as a wake-up call for some of college football's proven programs.

Here's everything you need to know about how and when to watch ESPN's rankings reveal show.

How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

For the first time in College Football Playoff history, 12 teams will participate in the playoffs. In previous years, only four teams received playoff bids. The 12-team format is set for both the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The framework for long-term playoff expansion beyond 2025 has not yet been agreed.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The 12 participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five highest ranked conference champions by the CFP Selection Committee and the next best seven teams.

The top four ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where they were ranked, or No. 12 if they were not in the top 12 in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions placed in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.

“For this reason,” the CFP warns on its website, “the rankings of Nos. 1 through 12 could look different than the final ranking.”

In the first round, the higher seeded team from each pairing acts as hosts.
