Man sentenced to life in prison for killing retired Citrus County sheriff's deputy

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – The Marion County man accused of killing a retired Citrus County sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to life in prison.

Steven Swearingen, 41, was convicted in the 5th Judicial District of second-degree murder in the death of 52-year-old Steven Smolensky.

Smolensky was a retired deputy with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

According to investigators, the shooting occurred in November 2021 at a home in Weirsdale.
