Man accused of hitting an unmarked police cruiser, leading to an hours-long standoff, has been formally charged

Charges have been formally filed against a man accused of hitting an unmarked patrol car in Dayton and causing an hours-long standoff.

James Hancock was charged Monday with failure to obey the commands or signals of a police officer, obstructing official business and inciting panic, according to Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records.

As already reported Message Center 7, Hancock allegedly struck an unmarked patrol car near W. Siebenthaler Avenue and Salem Avenue and then drove into an apartment complex on Wentworth Avenue on Oct. 18.

An hours-long standoff began and a SWAT team, bomb squad and hostage takers were called to the complex.

Hancock was arrested by SWAT about five hours after the standoff began.

Dayton Police Lt. Mark Ponichtera told News Center 7 that Hancock has a warrant for his arrest on charges of gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Ponichtera said: “He was also involved in the same murder.”

Hancock was indicted on these allegations on October 17th.

He remains in the Montgomery County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on November 7.
