Keyshawn Davis opens fight week with a visit to Jacox Elementary School

NORFOLK, VA (WTKR) – Keyshawn Davis knows the halls of Jacox Elementary School well. As a child he attended the Norfolk school. On Monday, he walked the same halls as hundreds of teenagers looked up to him.

Davis visited Jacox Elementary before his fight at Scope that Friday evening. His main goal was to give students positive memories.

“Anything they can take away from it, whether it was my demonstration or the speech I gave them, or whether I ran down the hall, whether I dabbed on them, I want them to remember that,” Davis said . “It meant a lot not just to me but to the school, the staff and everyone who saw it, who will see it here. I want them to take everything they can with them today and just remember it for the rest of their lives.”

Davis was greeted by students who lined the hallways and cheered his name. After hugs, high-fives and hellos, he made his way to the gym, where two classes of fifth-graders were waiting. The former Jacox student spoke to the group and encouraged them to pay attention to their grades, respect adults and push through with things they would rather not do. It was an exciting day for the students, but it was also an exciting day for Davis himself.

“When I was in school, we didn’t have much inspiration when we returned to the city,” he noted. “When I come here, I can see that Jacox, the community, appreciates something like DB3. I appreciate them for just supporting me, having the kids line up for me while I'm running through the halls, that definitely meant a lot to me.”

DB3 is the brand founded by Keyshawn and his brothers Kelvin and Keon. All three will enter the ring as part of Friday night's card, with Keyshawn's bout against Gustavo Lemos serving as the headliner. The middle Davis brother is a perfect 11-0 with seven knockouts. Kelvin is the eldest of the three siblings and is also putting his undefeated record on the line. He is 13-0 with seven knockouts and will face Yeis Solano in an eight-round welterweight bout. Keon will make his professional debut and face Jalen Moore in a four-round welterweight bout.

“The only thing on my mind is taking out Lemos,” Keyshawn said. “That’s the only thing I can think about. That means something, but that could all go away if I lose Friday, so the only thing I have to focus on and worry about is this fight.”

More than 90 percent of tickets for Friday night's fight have been sold and a sellout crowd of more than 10,000 fans is expected.
