GOAL! Real Madrid – Milan 0-1 (Thiaw 12)

Madrid's defense is asleep as Thiaw rises above everyone in the box and, following a perfect corner from Pulisic, fires a header straight past Courtois for his first goal for the club.

Pulisic has had a few seasons under his belt in Italy so far – that's now seven goals and four assists in all competitions this season.

Sporting 0-1 Manchester City: Gigantic Opportunity for the hosts, which they cannot take advantage of. City loses the ball and Gyökeres runs to the pass for the counterattack. He plays 1v1 against Ederson, but his shot ends up right in the goalkeeper's hands. Why didn't he go around him there?!

GOAL! Sporting 0-1 Manchester City (Föden 4)

So sloppy of Morita. Foden can easily defuse him and the City midfielder can run on and score the opening goal. Strange from Israel. The goalkeeper believes that his defender will save the shot and misses the right time to attempt the save.

Welcome to Manchester, Amorim.

Let's take a look at some fun stats – one for each of the late games:

  • Erling Haaland needs one goal to reach the record number of 45 goals in the Champions League. He could do this tonight in only his 43rd appearance in the tournament. The fastest player to reach 45 goals remains Ruud van Nistelrooy, who reached the milestone in his 56th appearance.

  • Kasper Schmeichel celebrates his 38th birthday today, making him the oldest player to appear in a Champions League game on his birthday. He joins former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman, who started against Schalke in September 2001.

  • Kylian Mbappe Only one goal is missing to join Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Raúl González, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thomas Müller and Thierry Henry among the players who have scored 50 goals in the Champions League (without qualifying). have achieved.

Alistair Johnston makes his crucial call to his Celtic teammates on TNT Sports: be still in Europe at the turn of the year.

Celtic Park on a Champions League evening. There is nothing like it. I'm not even sure the noise is human. It's impossible not to get shivers down your spine.

Four points after three games and we have a chance to put ourselves in the driver's seat. There are great ambitions in this group. We want to play in Europe in January. That is a big goal for us this year. It won't be easy, but games like this provide a great opportunity to do so.

Our first email of the evening comes from Krishna:

Didn't anyone tell Amorim that the nickname for OT changed to Theater of Nightmares? Or does he not follow football? Who in their right mind would walk into the quicksand made even more unstable by the blue vortex that relentlessly circles it?

The very best will obviously want a challenge and they obviously believe they can do it the guy to turn it around. Many who are close to him can confirm that he is a young, fresh manager on the rise, with vision, drive and personality.

But the worry is that it's somehow bigger than Amorim and Erik ten Hag and everyone else before him. Is there just something about the United task that is just too big, too difficult, too chaotic? Let's see.

Xabi Alonso's homecoming to Anfield is set to be special as the former Reds midfielder returns to German champions Bayer Leverkusen. In an alternative universe, Alonso could have been the one standing on the home team's sidelines, having come to prominence when Jurgen Klopp announced his departure. But he doesn't have time for ifs and maybes.

Let's talk about the game tomorrow, it's more interesting than my future. It feels great to be back here after a few years. It's always special. You can see the development of the club, the new stands look pretty great. It's a great game against Liverpool at a great moment, it can't get much better.

I don't think that much [about how he will be received]. I'm thinking more about how to prepare for the game. Maybe I'll think about my memories when I go for a walk or jog tomorrow. I know the city, I love it and I still have friends here, but I don't have time for tourism.

Brendan Rodgers has branded Celtic fans who use fireworks as selfish and reiterated his call for fans to stop using pyrotechnics, with RB Leipzig's Bonfire Night Champions League visit raising fears of a UEFA ban.

The use of fireworks by fans during last month's 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund resulted in Celtic being fined by Uefa and telling their fans they would be banned from attending an away game if another incident of this type occurs within two years. The warning was heeded when Celtic drew with Atalanta two weeks ago, but kick-off in the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen on Saturday was postponed after another Celtic pyrotechnic display. UEFA is keeping a close eye on the matter.

It's exactly what we said before, it's not something we really want to see. This sanction is hanging over the club and we really don't want that.

The two kick-offs at 17:45 GMT enter the final 20 minutes and here is how things stand.

PSV led Girona 2-0 through Ryan Flamingo's header from a throw-in, before Malik Tillman doubled the lead with a powerful right-footed shot after some good dribbling. A second yellow card for Arnau Martínez means the Spaniards are unlikely to make a comeback.

Slovan struck early after David Strelec fended off a counterattack, but the hosts now trail Dinamo 1-3 after goals from Dario Spikic, Petar Sucic and Sandro Kulenovic.

The current Champions League table in its current form. Of course, Aston Villa are at the top with nine points from three games.

A reminder of how the new competition rules work. At the end of the league phase, the best eight teams reach the round of 16. Teams 9–16 advance to the knockout phase playoffs (seeded) and teams 17–24 advance to the knockout phase playoffs (unseeded). The final 12 players will be eliminated from Europe and none will be relegated to the Europa League (unlike previous seasons).

preamble

Any hopes that Rúben Amorim might have had of a peaceful farewell to Sporting have finally disappeared. The Manchester United coach got his first taste of the British press when he was hounded for not answering a question in English (although he handled the test with aplomb).

Tonight he faces Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in what could be seen as his unofficial audition for United fans. A win against arch-rivals who have dominated in recent years would make Amorim an instant favorite at Old Trafford, although he is careful not to let expectations get too high.

And if he loses? Some will certainly overreact, but the reality is that a victory for Sporting over the English champions would be a real surprise. For now, tonight's game in Lisbon offers many fans their first real glimpse of Amorim's style of play and a chance to see how it translates to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid are hoping to recover from a disastrous and humiliating El Classico and an embarrassing and ill-advised Ballon d'Or boycott against an inconsistent Milan side; Brendan Rodgers wants to improve Celtic's European form against RB Leipzig, who are still winless in Europe this season; Bologna needs a win against Monaco if they want to progress to the next round; The Austrian champion Sturm has the difficult task of silencing the Yellow Wall in Dortmund; and Lille is somehow the favorite against Juventus after strong performances against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

It looks like it's going to be exciting, so take part in our live blog about the fourth Champions League matchday. Kick-offs all over Europe 20:00 GMT.

And as always, feel free to email me if you have any thoughts, questions, complaints, or predictions you'd like to share.
