Walmart Oven Woman Dead: A 19-year-old Sikh woman was found dead in a Walmart store and discovered in a walk-in bakery oven

Police in Canada are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee whose body was found in a store's walk-in oven. According to media reports, the Sikh woman was found dead in the bakery department of a Walmart store in the Canadian city of Halifax. Halifax Regional Police (HRP) said they were called to a sudden death at the Walmart at 6990 Mumford Road around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Halifax police said the Walmart store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was closed after the woman's body was found around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. According to police, the woman, who was not identified, was employed at the store and confirmed that she was found in a walk-in oven in the store's bakery section.

Investigators have not revealed the cause or manner of the Sikh woman's death, nor have they released her name to the public, USA Today reported. The Maritime Sikh Society confirmed to CTV News that she is a member of their community.

“It is very sad for us, also for her family, because she came for a better future and lost her life,” said Anmolpreet Singh of the Maritime Sikh Society.

She recently moved from India to Canada, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

Walmart in Canada remains closed due to death investigation

The Walmart store has been closed since Saturday evening while the investigation continues. In a statement to USA TODAY, Nova Scotia's Ministry of Labor, Skills and Immigration confirmed that a stop-work order was issued Tuesday for the bakery and an appliance at the Walmart store: “We speak to the family of the employee at this “We extend our condolences to this incredibly difficult time,” the department said in a statement. “As this is an active investigation, we cannot release any further details at this time. Walmart spokeswoman Amanda Moss told USA TODAY that the store is closed until further notice due to the investigation. Multiple outlets reported that the company is offering its employees 24/7 access to virtual care and providing on-site support, including grief counseling.

HRP Constable Martin Cromwell said police were aware of online speculation about the cause of the woman's death, PTI reported.

“The investigation is complex,” Cromwell said.

“We understand that the public is involved and we just wanted to encourage the public to be patient in our investigation and to ensure that family members and colleagues are involved.”

Cromwell said Halifax police are coordinating with appropriate authorities to assist in the investigation.

“We urge the public to exercise caution when sharing speculative information on social media,” HRP said in a statement on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the provincial labor department said a work stoppage was ordered at the bakery and “an appliance” at the Walmart store.

“It is important to note that the investigation has not yet reached the point where the cause and manner of death have been confirmed,” HRP said.
