CBS News expects the Arizona Senate race to benefit the Democrat

Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake are vying for the seat currently held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who is an independent but caucuses with Democrats. The seat is critical for Democrats to maintain control of the Senate or for Republicans to take control.

Gallego, a progressive lawmaker and former Marine, was leading in polls leading up to Election Day.

Big races in Arizona

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, a former Democrat-turned-independent and long a boogeyman of liberals, is retiring this year, and Democratic Rep. Rueben Gallego faces Republican Kari Lake in the race for the open seat. Gallego, who represents Phoenix and the surrounding western suburbs in Congress, has a fundraising advantage, having raised nearly $22 million through the end of September, while Lake has nearly $17 million.

Lake, a polarizing Trump ally, first ran for governor in 2022 and refused to accept the election results. A CBS News poll The race, held October 11-16, had Gallego 9 points ahead of Lake.

A CBS News poll conducted From October 11 to 16 in Arizona, Trump led Harris by 3 points. Trump is supported by voters who say immigration/border and the economy are their most important issues, while Harris has advantages among voters who are prioritizing Abortion rights and the state of democracy to keep this race close.
