KBI is investigating the death of a juvenile at the Northeast Kansas Juvenile Detention Center

GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) – An investigation is underway following the death of a teenager at the Northeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it was contacted the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 5, to investigate the death of a 17-year-old male from Dodge City. The teenager had been in the detention center since August because, according to the KBI, he was a child in need of care.

By law, the KBI investigates the deaths of prisoners in the custody of Kansas prisons and jails, as well as juveniles in state, county or city custody, unless the deceased person was under regular medical care or the death is determined to be natural an autopsy.

Authorities said the 17-year-old became unresponsive around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead around 7:40 a.m. after Geary County EMS continued resuscitation efforts while transporting him to a local hospital.

An autopsy is planned and the investigation is ongoing, the KBI said.
